How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal uses short, high-intensity pulses of light that penetrate the skin and target tattoo ink. The light shatters the ink particles into fragments small enough for the body’s immune system to carry away over the following weeks, progressively fading the tattoo.

Our Q-switched Nd:YAG laser delivers two wavelengths — 1064 nm for dark inks and 532 nm for red and warmer colours. The energy pulse is so brief (a few nanoseconds) that surrounding skin stays cool while the ink absorbs the full impact.

Which tattoo inks can be removed?

Black, dark blue and red inks respond best to laser removal and usually clear within six to eight sessions. Green, purple and yellow inks take longer and may need ten or more sessions. White, pastel and metallic inks can be resistant to laser and occasionally darken before fading — we explain all of this honestly at consultation.

Factors that affect how many sessions you’ll need

  • Ink colours and depth of pigment
  • Age of the tattoo — older tattoos fade faster
  • Professional vs amateur tattoo — amateur ink often fades faster
  • Your skin tone and immune response
  • Location on the body — closer to the heart clears faster

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

Laser tattoo removal is moderately uncomfortable, often described as a hot elastic-band flick or bacon grease against the skin. Most clients tolerate sessions without numbing because each pulse is very brief and small tattoos are done in minutes. Numbing cream is available on request for larger pieces.

How many sessions will I need for tattoo removal?

Most tattoos clear in six to ten sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart. Amateur, older and single-colour black tattoos often need fewer sessions; multicolour, dense or layered professional work typically needs more. We reassess progress every three sessions and give you honest, photo-based feedback.

What should I do before and after tattoo removal?

Before your session

  • Avoid sun or self-tan on the tattoo for four weeks before treatment
  • Keep the area well moisturised in the week before
  • Eat and drink normally — do not fast
  • Avoid aspirin and alcohol for 24 hours to reduce bruising

After your session

  • Expect redness, swelling and a light blistering that settles in 3 to 7 days
  • Apply aftercare ointment and keep covered for 48 hours
  • No swimming, saunas, sun or exercise for 7 days
  • Use SPF 50 on the area for three months after each session

FAQs

Laser Tattoo Removal Questions

Will laser tattoo removal leave a scar?

When performed correctly, laser tattoo removal should not leave a scar. The laser targets ink, not skin. Existing scarring from the original tattoo (common with amateur or heavy-handed work) may be more visible once the ink fades. Following aftercare precisely protects skin quality during your course.

Can all tattoos be fully removed?

Most tattoos can be significantly faded or fully removed, but some — especially those with white, metallic or complex cosmetic inks — are resistant and may only partially clear. We give you an honest assessment at your free consultation based on the tattoo in front of us.

Can I have a new tattoo over the area after removal?

Yes. Many clients use laser fading (3 to 5 sessions) specifically to prepare the skin for a cover-up tattoo. Fading lightens the existing ink enough for your tattoo artist to layer new design work cleanly over the top. We can coordinate timing with your artist.

Is laser tattoo removal safe for all skin tones?

Our Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is safe for most skin tones, including darker skin, when settings are correctly tailored. Clients with darker skin are treated conservatively at first and progress is closely monitored. We always patch test before starting a course.
