How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by emitting a focused beam of light into the skin. The pigment in each hair follicle absorbs the light and converts it into heat, which damages the follicle and prevents future hair growth. Six to eight sessions achieve permanent reduction on most areas.

Each pulse of laser energy targets hair follicles in the active growth phase, known as the anagen phase. Because not every follicle is in anagen at the same time, a course of six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart catches hairs across the full growth cycle. The result is a steady, visible reduction in hair density after each session, with most clients reporting 70 to 90 per cent reduction by their sixth appointment.

Which areas can you treat with laser hair removal?

We treat almost every area of the face and body, from small zones like the upper lip and chin to larger areas such as full legs, back and chest. Male and female clients are treated with equal care in a private, judgement-free environment at our Bolton clinic.

Common areas we treat for women

  • Face: upper lip, chin, sideburns, jawline, full face
  • Body: underarms, half arms, full arms, half legs, full legs
  • Intimate: standard bikini, extended bikini, Brazilian, Hollywood
  • Other: nape of neck, stomach line, toes and fingers

Common areas we treat for men

  • Face and neck: beard shaping, cheeks, neckline tidying
  • Body: chest, shoulders, full back, arms, stomach
  • Other: ears, nose, between eyebrows (with protective shielding)

Is laser hair removal safe for all skin types?

Modern medical-grade lasers are safe for most skin types and tones, from very fair (Fitzpatrick I) to deep brown (Fitzpatrick VI). We adjust wavelength, pulse width and energy levels to match your skin, and a patch test confirms suitability before your first full session.

Older laser systems struggled with darker skin tones because they could not distinguish melanin in the hair from melanin in the skin. Our diode laser, combined with precise settings and a trained therapist, treats all skin types safely. Clients with very light hair (blonde, grey, red) may find laser less effective because the light has less pigment to target, and we will say so honestly at your consultation.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most clients describe laser hair removal as a warm snap against the skin, similar to a flick from an elastic band. Our laser uses built-in contact cooling that chills the skin before each pulse, making sensitive areas like the upper lip and bikini line comfortable for most people.

Pain tolerance varies by area and by person. The upper lip and bikini are typically the most sensitive; larger limbs are much milder. If you find any area uncomfortable, your therapist can adjust settings or pace treatment differently. Numbing cream is not routinely needed but is available on request.

How many sessions of laser hair removal will I need?

Most clients need six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart to achieve permanent hair reduction. Hormonal areas like the face and bikini sometimes need additional top-up sessions once or twice a year. Your therapist confirms your personal plan at your free consultation.

The final number depends on your hair colour, hair density, hormones, skin tone and the area being treated. Clients with dark coarse hair on light skin typically see the fastest results. Hormone-driven growth, for example around PCOS or menopause, may need ongoing maintenance sessions even after the initial course.

What should I do before and after my session?

Before your appointment

  • Shave the area 12 to 24 hours before your session. Do not wax, pluck or thread for six weeks prior.
  • Avoid sun exposure and self-tan for two weeks before and after each session.
  • Arrive with clean skin free of lotions, deodorant or make-up on the treatment area.
  • Tell your therapist about any new medications, pregnancy or recent cosmetic procedures.

After your appointment

  • Apply the aftercare lotion we provide twice daily for 48 hours.
  • Avoid hot showers, gyms, saunas, swimming and direct sun for 48 hours.
  • Use SPF 50 on treated areas whenever exposed to sun, year-round.
  • Do not wax or pluck between sessions. You can shave normally.

Full aftercare advice is available on our aftercare guide.

FAQs

Laser Hair Removal Questions

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal provides permanent hair reduction, which the FDA and MHRA define as a long-term, stable decrease in the number of hairs growing back after treatment. Most clients see a 70 to 90 per cent permanent reduction after a full course. Hormonal changes can trigger new growth later, which is why occasional maintenance sessions are sometimes helpful.

Can I have laser hair removal if I’m pregnant?

No. We do not treat clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, because hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect hair growth patterns and no long-term safety studies exist for laser treatment during pregnancy. We’ll happily treat you from three months after you finish breastfeeding.

Does laser hair removal work on white, grey or blonde hair?

Laser hair removal relies on the pigment in the hair to absorb the light. White, grey and very light blonde hairs contain little or no pigment, so results are usually limited. We give honest advice at your consultation and may recommend electrolysis as an alternative for unpigmented hair.

How long does each laser hair removal session take?

Session time depends on the area. An upper lip or underarms takes about 10 minutes, a standard bikini around 15, half legs around 30, and full legs typically 45 to 60 minutes. We always build in time for cleansing the area, eye protection and aftercare.

Can I shave between laser hair removal sessions?

Yes, shaving is the only hair removal method allowed between sessions. Waxing, plucking, threading and epilation all remove the hair from the root, which disrupts the treatment cycle. Shaving leaves the follicle intact so it can still be targeted by the next laser session.

What results can I expect after one laser hair removal session?

Between 10 and 14 days after your first session, treated hairs begin to shed and fall out naturally. You should see a visible reduction in density, followed by a regrowth phase of lighter, finer hairs. Full results require a complete course of six to eight sessions.
